I have been to New York City a million times (okay, maybe not quite a million) as a kid, teenager and adult, but this was my first visit with our teenage kids. I was so excited to introduce them to New York and see the city through their eyes.
This time, I researched our NYC itinerary in advance to make sure I found totally cool places in New York to explore with my teens that they actually liked!
Below are some highlights of the best things to do with your teens in NYC, including places to eat, that will make you parent of the year in your teenager’s eyes. All of these things can be done over 2, 3 or 4 days in NYC with your teen, depending on how much time you want to spend doing each.

Exploring NYC With Teens
I was a little nervous about taking my teenagers to New York for the first time. The city can be a bit overwhelming for a first-time visitor.
I was pleasantly surprised that even the teen in our family who doesn’t like to walk was so excited by what they saw that they didn’t mind clocking 20,000 steps a day.
It confirmed for me that the best time to take your kids to New York, when they can truly appreciate it and experience all it has to offer, is during their teenage years.
Fun Things To Do With Teens
1. Central Park Pedicab Tour
I booked a Central Park Pedicab not knowing what to expect. It turned out to be my teens’ favorite activity during our trip.
It was an amazing introduction for them to New York and Central Park which they have seen snippets of in movies and on social media.
Our driver was highly entertaining, providing narration and pop culture commentary throughout, pointing out famous places where TV shows and movies were filmed, and historic moments in time. My teens were never bored.

The bonus for me was that our driver encouraged us to take family photos at several stops and he was an amazing photographer.
He knew exactly where we should take Instagram/SnapChat-worthy photos and told us where to stand and how to pose. I actually framed one of the photos he took because it was so good!

We booked an hour long tour for the four of us, with two people in each pedicab.
The bicycle drivers stay together and take you around to all of the hotspots in Central Park.
The hour’s tour reaches as far north as Bethesda Fountain, but you can also book a longer tour to see even more of the park.
Blankets are provided to keep you warm on chilly days. A little expensive for an hour’s tour but I thought it was completely worth it.
2. Check out Gossip Girl’s filming locations
Inevitably, if your teen is a Gossip Girl fan, they won’t believe they are in New York until they see some of the locations from the show.
We took our teens to the stairs outside of the Met. They didn’t actually want to go inside; they just wanted to see the stairs where many scenes of Gossip Girl were filmed (and of course all the Instagram photos from the MET Gala).
Have them strike a pose on the stairs.

You can take them to the see where Blair and Chuck get married at the Bethesda Terrace & Foundation, or drop by Grand Central Station where Serena’s dramatic return to New York was filmed.
If you prefer not to have to plan your trip itinerary around Gossip Girl locations, leave it to the professionals and book a Gossip Girl Tour. Your teens will think you are the coolest parent out there.
3. Shopping in SoHo
Soho is New York’s shopping mecca for teens. I’ve been to Soho many times but experiencing it through the teenage lens was an entirely different experience.
My teens were in shopping heaven when I told them we were spending the afternoon in Soho.
All of their favorite stores, which are only available online where we live, were in a three-block radius – Glossier, Edikted, Brandy Melville, Princess Polly, etc.

We happened to be there during Spring Break which was insanely busy.
If you can, try to avoid visiting Soho with your teens on Fridays and the weekends or major school breaks.
I took it in stride and sped up the process by standing in the fitting room line while my kids shopped and then the cashier line while they tried the clothes on.
Would I have done that at home?
Maybe not but this was a trip for my kids, so they definitely got the NYC shopping experience and I definitely scored mom points with them.
➡️Parent Pro Tip – New York City has very few public bathrooms. The only easily accessible bathroom nearby is the mini Bloomingdales on Broadway. It is also a good place to sit down, take a break from shopping, and grab a bite to eat.
4. Catch a Broadway/Off-Broadway Show
You cannot visit New York without taking your kids to a show.
Our kids are not really into musicals but they had a blast at Six, as did my husband, and I was happy that they got the New York theater experience.

There are plenty of off-broadway shows as well that will appeal to your teen’s interests while also being easy on your budget.
If you are not tied to a strict itinerary, you can try getting last-minute tickets through Todaytix (and avoid having to stand in person at TKTS).
If you are in NYC for only a short time, I recommend booking tickets in advance and was able to take advantage of some deals through Broadway Direct.
5. Stroll down Fifth Avenue
Our teens had the best time window shopping on Fifth Avenue, because let’s face it, who can afford to shop there?

They loved seeing the flagship designer stores and some of the outrageous window displays like the Louis Vutton building wrap.
The sidewalks south of Central Park to 42nd street are packed with New Yorkers and tourists so there is no need to visit more than once.
An hour should give them enough time to take it all in.
6. Have a meal with a view at the Edge & visit the observation deck

There are a lot of observation decks in New York to get panoramic views of the city. Some of them are quite pricey and feature other distractions that take away from the view.
I am always looking to get value for your dollar, so I think the Edge and its Peak restaurant, located on the 101st floor, offer the best deal that will certainly impress your teen.
You can have a nice lunch and show your teen an amazing view for a little more than what the Edge observation deck ticket alone would cost — and without the lineups.
You will need to spend a minimum of $40 per person to get complimentary access to the Edge observation deck, located one floor below.
That seems like a deal to me when prices for a ticket during the day start at $42 per person.
If you can’t get reservations, I would still recommend a visit to the Edge observation deck.
7. Jellycat Diner (and FAO Schwarz)
If your teen collects Jellycats, they’ll want to check out the Jelly Cat Diner in FAO Schwarz.
At first, I thought it was a real diner with food, but it’s actually a brief 2-minute assembly line show where they “cook” Jellycat food items such as pancakes that they then wrap up for you to purchase.
Watch the “show” if you like and then explore the rest of the FAO Schwarz store, including its large Jellycat collection that they sell.
The store’s footprint isn’t as large as its original location so it can get crowded quickly.
8. Dance with Lenny the Doorman on TikTok
Take your kids to dance with Lenny the Doorman, a rising TikTok star who is the doorman at the Omni Berkshire at E. 52nd St. and Madison Ave.
Lenny knows all the latest dance moves and is known for his TikTok dances with hotel guests and tourists who drop by. Parents can join in too!
9. Stop by Times Square
You can’t avoid it – your teens will want to see Times Square where the New Year’s Eve ball drop happens every year.
And can you blame them for wanting to surround themselves with the iconic Times Square billboards and mega stores?

Your teen will love stops at the three-story M&M store, Hershey’s and the largest Sephora store in the United States.
The teen fave Raising Cane’s location in Times Square features a DJ spinning, giving off a nightclub vibe.
10. Museum Visit
If your teens are like mine, museum visits can be a bit of a bore but before you write it off, check if there’s a contemporary exhibit that might interest them at the MOMA, the Fashion Institute, the Guggenheim, or the immersive, less museum-like Color Factory.
Cool Spots to Eat With Your Teen
Sweets and Snacks
Serendipity 3
Yes, Serendipity 3 is the café from the John Cusack & Kate Beckinsale movie with the same name, with a totally different décor now and one of the “it” stops for teens visiting New York.

It’s a colourful, fun restaurant that has sit-down or take-out frozen drinks and massive ice cream sundaes.
We stopped by the original location on the Upper East Side, but there is also a location in Times Square.
Best known for the Frozen Hot Chocolate, we shared two of them between the four of us.
Candy If your teen is candy obsessed, they probably already know about Dylan’s Candy Bar, located in the shops of Hudson Yards, known for its inviting and colorful décor and massive selection of candy.
Other popular social media notables are A Lil Sweet Treat and Swedish candy company BonBon, both with locations in NYC.
Bakery/café
You can’t visit New York without at least trying the famous banana bread pudding at Magnolia’s Bakery.
And I know this recommendation will sound nuts, but our teens were blown away by the three-floor Starbucks at the Empire State Building, featuring a lounge, restaurant, tasting rooms and a bar.
Our kids bought unique Starbucks merch there with their own money, but I have to say, they were NYC-branded items that I had never seen at any other Starbucks so I gave the purchase a thumbs up.
Brunch options
If you are looking for a sit-down brunch, Sarabeth’s or Sadelle’s will be the place your teen has seen on Instagram or TikTok.
Sarabeth’s has a full brunch menu and your teens will want the pancakes.
At Sadelle’s you can share their signature tower of tuna, smoked salmon accompanied by their delicious bagels. Your teen will be sending snaps of the tower to all their friends.
Dinner

TAO is a great combination of modern Chinese food in a kind of nightclub atmosphere. Our teens loved eating here and we all devoured the Chinese broccoli dish.
If your teens are into musicals, then I would recommend some of the singing Broadway-themed restaurants, where the waiters sing show tunes while serving your meal.
Ellen’s Stardust is the most well-known, with long lines and no reservations but many prefer Gayle’s Broadway Rose and you can make reservations.
You aren’t there for the food as much as you are for the entertainment.
Where to Stay with Teens
You can find budget spots in Times Square or downtown in the Financial District, but I usually avoid these areas due to the excessive noise, crowds, and the Financial District is just out of the way.

The best places to stay with your teens are in Midtown, offering easy access to major attractions, either by foot or just a few subway stops away.
Your hotel will be one of the largest expenses on your trip, so the hotels I recommend below are mid-range and can accommodate families.
Save the luxury stays for a couple’s getaway!
📍Lotte New York Palace– One of the largest rooms in New York with 2 double beds, centrally located, just east of St Patrick’s Cathedral. This hotel consistently delivers and your teens will recognize it as it has served as the backdrop for many TV shows and movies, including Gossip Girl.
📍Royalton Park Avenue – Located a little further south at E. 29th St, there are plenty of family-style suites to choose from. A great place to stay in the summer, where your teens can cool off at the outdoor pool, a rarity in NYC.
📍Omni Berkshire – Located at E.52nd & Madison Ave., this is a fantastic location that is a block away from 5th avenue yet quiet area to stay after rush hour. The hotel can accommodate families of four in a room with two double beds and offers family suites. A little dated, I am told a reno is slated soon.
Top Teen Travel Tips

➡️Best way to get around with your teen is on foot or by subway
Walking through a certain neighborhood or street, your teen will learn more about New York City than in any museum.
Taking the New York subway is an experience in itself. It is very reliable and quick, if not at times, entertaining.
Avoid taxis – there is so much traffic in NYC that you will end up paying for a long, expensive cab ride while sitting in traffic when you could have gotten there in half the time by subway and for a quarter of the price.
➡️Stick to one neighborhood per day
Plan your days by neighborhood. Sticking to attractions in the same area will make the day more relaxed for both you and your teen.
Otherwise, you might end up rushing from the Lower East Side to the Upper West Side, with plenty of complaints along the way.
➡️Plan an itinerary but stay flexible
Plan but don’t overplan. Inevitably, you will stumble upon a place somewhere your teens discover something not on the itinerary or want to stay longer in a certain area.
Come with a list of options for your teens but know that you won’t get to do everything.
➡️Take breaks and go at your teen’s pace
As a parent, you are going to want to show your teens everything in New York but remember to go at their pace.
Although you may feel satisfied checking off the attractions visited on your list, your teens will not want to rush around the city.
Stop for a New York pretzel or trendy matcha, sit in Central Park or in Washington Square.
Go at a pace that matches your teen’s energy level. For instance, I knew that by 4:30 pm, our teens needed a break at the hotel before dinner.
