New York City is truly the city that never sleeps. Trips to NYC can be overwhelming, especially at night when there are so many choices. Even on Christmas Eve, I’ve still found things to do at night.
Here you’ll find handpicked things to do in NYC at night that go beyond the typical evening recommendations of Broadway shows, wandering around Times Square or hitting the bar scene.
It includes date night ideas, free activities, seasonal events, and things to do in NYC at night with teens. Options range in price, but all are fun and worth your time or else I wouldn’t recommend them.
20 Things To Do In NYC At Night
This list is for adults and couples visiting NYC, along with some ideas for those bringing teens along.
I’ve purposely left out bus tours. While it can be a great way to end the day while being driven around, I don’t see how you will get anywhere or see much of anything in typically horrendous NYC traffic.
1. Take In A Live Jazz Show
Every time we visit NYC, my husband can’t wait to hit the jazz clubs. NYC has a fantastic jazz scene.
In addition to a show ticket or cover charge, most jazz clubs require a minimum food or drink purchase but ordering alcohol isn’t mandatory.

There are generally two set times, making it easy to fit in dinner. Buy tickets directly from the club’s website as most of them don’t work with third-party resellers.
A few of our favorites:
Blue Note – Table seating is shared with other people at Blue Note and really tight but my husband wanted to be right in front of the band and we sure were!
You can also choose to sit further back or standing-room-only. We bought tickets day of and showed up right before the show started but if you are part of a group, get there in advance so you can be seated together.
Village Vanguard – Tucked away in Greenwich Village, it’s one of New York’s oldest jazz clubs, known for its cozy, warm and intimate vibe. The Village Vanguard’s space is small so you almost feel like you are in someone’s living room listening to them play.
Monday nights feature a large jazz orchestra, an excellent way to enjoy the music without the weekend crowds. There is a one-drink minimum order and make sure you eat in advance as they don’t serve food, “not even a peanut” to quote their website.
Birdland – A larger venue where you can find jazz performances every night of the week. Birdland’s lower level is the theatre, offering a more intimate cabaret-style set up and earlier sets starting at 5:30 pm. The upper level is a typical club-style layout.
Both offer full dinner menus.
2. Catch A Set At The Comedy Cellar
Some of the best comedians got their start at the Comedy Cellar. You’ll also see rising talent you may recognize from TV. Shows take place most nights and the weekend lineup is confirmed on Thursdays.
Tickets are reasonably priced and there is a two-item food or drink minimum.
3. Sail Into The Sunset on A Harbor Cruise

Don’t confuse this with a party cruise. Instead, this guided boat tour gives you stunning sunset views of New York’s skyline and the Statue of Liberty. The ride is about 90 minutes and the musical accompaniment on the boat makes for a relaxing and romantic ride.
4. Date Night At The MET
On Fridays and Saturdays, the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art) stays open until 9 pm for date night. In addition to touring the exhibits, there are live music performances and two-for-one drink specials.

In the summer and early fall, don’t miss cocktails on the Roof Garden during sunset while taking in the amazing views of Central Park.
5. NYC Food Tour Experience

Whenever we travel, we always book a food tour. It’s an effortless and delicious way to explore different neighborhoods, discover local eats and get authentic recommendations from your guide, all in a short period of time. And dinner is included! Try one of these:
🍜 Chinatown and Little Italy Food Tour
6. Romantic Central Park Carriage Ride
You’ve seen it in the movies and yes, you really should take a horse and carriage ride at least once in New York. It’s a beautiful and romantic way to see Central Park in the evening. One of my favorite memories from our honeymoon.
7. Classic cabaret of famous entertainers at Café Carlyle
We stumbled upon the Carlyle Hotel while looking for shelter from the rain after a walk through Central Park.
We had no idea about the history behind this hidden gem on the Upper East Side— a place that has been a favorite to everyone from President John F. Kennedy to Kendall Jenner.
Café Carlyle is located inside the hotel and is old-school New York, offering intimate live music and cabaret performances alongside dinner.
It attracts legendary entertainers past and present, including Art Garfunkel, Rita Wilson, Julio Iglesias, Tony Danza, Candace Bushnell, Judy Collins, Alan Cumming, and Isaac Mizrahi.
A New York evening you soon won’t forget.
8. NYC Mafia and Local Food Tour
True crime fans won’t want to miss this unique tour combination of crime history and food in the East Village and Little Italy, as told through the eyes of a retired NYPD guide.
You’ll hear about the neighborhoods’ connections to organized crime and personal experiences. Dinner is included, spread out at local favorite food joints along the way.
9. Celeb-spotting
On almost every trip to New York, I’ve spotted a celebrity. If that’s your thing, you’re in the right city.

I’ve had the most luck at night in the Meatpacking District, Tribeca, Chelsea, and SoHo, where stars are often seen dining at standout restaurants like French-style Balthazar (the steak frites is incredible), The Polo Bar, and Via Carota.
Even if you don’t spot a celebrity, these spots are prime locations for people-watching and immersing yourself in the NYC nightlife scene.
Free Things To Do In NYC At Night
You don’t need to spend a lot to experience the real New York at night. Some of the city’s best evening activities are free.
10. Get A Ticket to Be Part of the SNL audience
If you find yourself in New York when Saturday Night Live is taping, this is my absolute favorite free thing to do – but it does require some planning and a bit of luck.
If you have flexibility in timing your trip to NYC, you can enter the audience ticket lottery, but you must submit your request via email during the month of August only.

You can’t request a specific date, and there’s no guarantee you’ll get a ticket. Yes, it’s a bit of a gamble, but worth a shot. OR…
You might have better luck with standby tickets for either the 8 p.m. dress rehearsal or the 11:30 p.m. live taping. Standby tickets can be requested through the SNL Standby Reservation link, which goes live at 10 a.m. on the Thursday before show day.
If there’s space, you’ll receive a confirmation email and get the chance to hear them shout: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”
11. Walk Back to Manhattan on the Brooklyn Bridge
Another one of my favorite free things to do in NYC at night, which requires no planning and can be done on a whim.
Walking back across this iconic bridge, with the Manhattan skyline lit up ahead, is truly something special. You don’t fully appreciate its grandeur until you’ve experienced it for yourself.

12. Attend A Free Concert
One of the amazing things about New York is the number of sponsored events that offer free admission.
In the summer, check out the SummerStage Festival, held annually in Central Park, and the Bryant Park Picnic Performances, which feature everything from opera, symphony, and jazz to contemporary dance.
What To Do In NYC At Night With Teens
If you’ve got teens in tow, I’ve included some options that will keep them entertained.
13. Rooftop Hotel Pool
An awesome way to beat the NYC summer heat. Skip the pavement and enjoy the view with an evening dip—your teens will be thrilled!
Most hotels with outdoor pools have restrictions on when teens can swim, but Margaritaville Resort Times Square welcomes teens and families staying at the hotel.
It’s home to the only rooftop pool in Times Square, making it a lot of fun if you want to stay in the heart of the action!
14. Go Ice Skating Outdoors
A classic New York activity and iconic movie scene your teens will want to recreate. A fun way to keep your teens active and entertained at the same time.

While the Rink at Rockefeller Center is the most recognized, it can get pricey, especially at night.
The Rink at Bryant Park is far more affordable, offering free admission to those who bring their own skates, or free admission if you rent skates there. It’s open late, sometimes until midnight on weekends and holidays.
15. Try a Frozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity
After ice skating, head to Serendipity for their famous frozen hot chocolate – available at the original Upper East Side location or in Times Square.

It’s the dessert spot for teens and you’ll probably recognize it from the 2001 movie Serendipity (though the interior looks a bit different now).
16. Sunset At The Summit
Take your teen for sunset at The Summit and Insta-worthy pics—then stay to enjoy the rest of the evening.
Time your ticket for an hour or more before sunset. This will give you enough time to get 1,000 feet in the air in time to catch the golden hour with uninterrupted, 360-degree views of the NYC skyline via the Summit’s floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Once your teen is done capturing those sunset shots, explore the immersive installations on the other two floors and the open-air observation deck.
➡️ Just a heads-up: once you move up to the next floor, you can’t go back down—so take your time on each level.

Things to See In NYC At Night During the Holidays
New York City is especially magical during the holidays. I’ve put together a few ideas that go beyond the typical NYC holiday to-do list.
17. 4th of July Fireworks
If you’re in NYC for Independence Day, don’t miss Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Show. It takes place over either the East River or the Hudson River (the location alternates each year).

Top viewing spots for East River shows include the East River Greenway, South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Bridge Park, or a rooftop hotel or restaurant (just be sure to book those in advance).
18. Holiday Lights
Beyond the classic displays along Fifth Avenue and at Rockefeller Center, don’t miss the city’s most dazzling holiday lights at Hudson Yards.
With over 2 million lights, it’s a truly spectacular nighttime display that will instantly put you in the holiday spirit.
19. Bryant Park Winter Village
A charming outdoor winter experience featuring a holiday market, ice skating, cozy dining igloos, and a bar and food hall inside The Lodge. It runs from late October through March, with the holiday market open until early January.
20. Nutcracker Performance at Brookfield Place
Take a break from holiday shopping and enjoy a performance of The Nutcracker by the New York Theatre Ballet. Shows are limited and the complimentary tickets should be reserved in advance.
Where to Stay
My go-to for an adults-only getaway is to treat yourself—just a little—by staying somewhere elevated that doesn’t completely blow the budget.
If you’re like us, you’re not in the room much anyway, and you want to make sure there’s enough left to spend on outings and dinners.

Recommended Hotels:
Lotte New York Palace – Known for its spacious rooms, elegant lobby and guest spaces with views of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Centrally located at Madison at 50th St., steps away from 5th Ave.
The West House – Midtown art-deco hotel that serves complimentary breakfast and offers Happy Hour drinks and snacks for guests. A block away from Broadway and short walk to Central Park.
Hotel Aka Nomad – A fairly new boutique hotel with ultra-modern and sophisticated design, formerly known as the Roger Hotel. Close to all the sites at Madison & 31st St.
FAQs
What to do at night in Times Square?
Times Square can get extremely crowded and hectic at night, so I don’t recommend spending too much time there. It’s fun to experience for a few minutes but I usually only pass through if it’s en route to where I’m headed.
Is 2 nights enough in NYC?
The beauty of NYC is that you can pack a lot into one night. Many people come for a weekend (2 nights) but personally, I find 3 nights to be the sweet spot. It gives you enough time to experience everything you want to see after dark without feeling rushed.
What to do in NYC at night if you don’t drink?
There are plenty of things to do in NYC at night that don’t involve drinking. In fact, none of the experiences I’ve mentioned revolve around alcohol.
