Taormina and Tropea are two of Italy’s most beautiful cliffside towns. One is called “the Pearl of the Ionian Sea” and the other, “the Pearl of Calabria”. Both promise unforgettable sea views, charming streets and gorgeous sunsets but each town has its own personality.

Below I’ll compare Taormina and Tropea so you can decide which town is a better fit for your next trip or whether to visit, we did on our last vacation to Italy.

Taormina vs. Tropea

Here’s my breakdown of Taormina vs. Tropea, covering everything from location and vibe to beaches, costs, things to do, and which town works best for families or couples. I also share how to visit both places on the same trip.

Location

🌋 Taormina

This resort town sits on the eastern coast of Sicily, Italy’s largest island. Nestled into the cliffs above the Ionian Sea, it offers incredible views of both the sea and Mt. Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes.

Taormina’s diverse landscape and history add to its charm, with its Greek roots and Roman influences visible in the town’s architecture, streets and character.

It’s also the larger and busier of the two, both in population (around 10,000) and in size.

🏖️ Tropea

An Italian piazza with palm trees, benches and buildings in the background

The beach town of Tropea is located in Calabria, the southernmost region of Italy’s mainland, and often described as the “toe” of Italy’s boot shape.

The town sits on atop cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, with dramatic views of the sea and Stromboli volcano in the distance on clear days.

Tropea is the smaller of the two towns, with roughly half of Taormina’s population but with an equally alluring coastal charm.

Town Atmosphere & Vibe

🌋 Taormina

People walking down Corso Umberto in Taormina

Taormina has a charming, romantic energy. Tourists flock here for cliffside stays, picturesque views of Mt. Etna and old-world character with modern touches.

During the day, the streets can get crowded with cruise ship tour groups from the port of Messina (about 45 minutes away) but we managed to avoid them for the most part. At night, visitors stroll along the pedestrian-only streets lined with shops, restaurants and cafes, to catch a glimpse of the sunset over the sea.

The town’s elegance also attracts travelers looking for luxury stays in stylish hotels, and high-end experiences that match the designer stores along Corso Umberto, the main pedestrian street.  Despite this luxury tourism, we still fell in love with Taormina, its beauty and its magic.

🏖️ Tropea

Tropea has a more laid-back, beach-town vibe. Everything here revolves around the beach, Italian culture and authentic Calabrian cuisine. This is where Italians themselves come to relax for the weekend. Even though it gets busy in summer, it never feels overwhelmingly crowded.

Evenings are lively, full of tourists and locals walking the streets, enjoying the sea breeze and catching the unbelievable sunsets. The Italians who work in Tropea also live in Tropea. You can find restaurants where locals actually eat.

Beaches

🌋 Taormina

  • A bunch of beach chairs and umbrellas looking at the sea

Many people associate Taormina with the beach but technically, as the town center is on a cliff, it doesn’t have one. To reach the beaches below, often referred to as “Lower Taormina”,  you can take a quick 2-minute cable car ride or a 30-minute walk down to Isola Bella or Mazzarò.

The beaches themselves are small, pebbly and lined with beach clubs, with limited public space to sit. But visitors, like us, enjoy being able to take breaks at the beach in between sightseeing, especially during the Italian summer heat.

There are other beaches a few minutes outside of Taormina, which I discuss in my guide to the 5 best beaches near Taormina.

🏖️ Tropea

  • beach blue sea water and buildings on a cliff in the distance
  • People floating in turquoise water
  • People swimming in the water with the Santa Maria Sanctuary on a cliff in Tropea in the background
  • Rows of people sitting on chairs and under umbrellas on the beach

Staying in this town is all about the beach. Tropea is home to some of the nicest beaches in Italy and some of the only beaches that have white, soft sand and incredibly crystal-clear blue water.

Getting to one of the three main beaches in Tropea doesn’t take as long on foot as it does in Taormina.

But the only way to get down to the beach from the cliffside town is walking down (and then up) staircases with up to 200 steps, or by car. The beach is less accessible for those with mobility issues but if you can walk, the stairs really aren’t bad and you’re on the beach within minutes.

The beaches here have much more public space and while there are beach clubs, they don’t dominate the way they do in Taormina.

Things to Do

🌋 Taormina

  • a row of people walking high up on a volcano crater
    Climbing Craters at Mt. Etna
  • Wine glass with red wine in it and the word Gambino

Taormina has many things to do in town or nearby for history buffs and adventure lovers. You can:

  • Tour the Ancient Greek-Roman Amphitheatre and if you are lucky, catch a concert
  • Hike Mt Etna along the volcanic craters or ascending to higher viewpoints
  • Wander the beautiful botanical gardens
  • Visit nearby wineries for tastings
  • Take day trips to Catania and archeological sites in Siracusa, Ortygia and beyond

It’s a destination that offers many options that blend history, nature and Sicilian culture. For more ideas, check out my list of memorable things to do in Taormina.

  • fish swimming in turquoise water
  • Fileja pasta in a nduja tomato sauce with cheese sprinkled on top in a clay bowl

In Tropea, most activities revolve and the coastline and Calabrian culture. You can:

  • Relax on the beach, swim or kayak and discover hidden coves
  • Climb up to the medieval Santa Maria dell’Isola Monastery
  • Take a boat tour along the Coast of the Gods, swim, snorkel and explore grottos
  • Drive 20-minutes to the beautiful and secluded Capo Vaticano
  • Plan a day trip to one of the seven Aeolian Islands, including the Stromboli volcano
  • Taste Tropea’s famous red onions, nduja and fileja pasta during a cooking class

Accommodation

🌋Taormina

An uphill pathway with trees on either side and a hotel building at the top

In Taormina, there are a range of areas where you can stay, either on the beach, in the historic city center or further up the cliff for panoramic views.

While there are options to suit different budgets, Taormina has become wildly popular and therefore more expensive since White Lotus filmed its second season at the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace hotel.

The increased popularity has driven up hotel prices but you can still find charming boutique hotels if you plan ahead (a must!).

🏖️Tropea

Tropea also offers plenty of accommodations at all budget levels. You’ll pay more to be closer to or on the beach but it’s worth it for the sea views. There are also many spots just outside of the town center that offer more space, beautiful views or resort-style amenities.

Cost

After visiting Taormina and Tropea on the same trip, I can say without hesitation that Taormina is more expensive. There’s a clear markup on tourist services such as day trips, restaurants, and even rides to the beach or train station.

Luxury shopping with brands like Louis Vuitton attracts travellers looking for high-end experiences who are willing to pay more and prices reflect that.

Taormina was more of a splurge for us but we definitely found it worth it.

Tropea, in comparison, felt more affordable. Renting beach chairs, eating out and booking excursions cost less than in Taormina. You can still enjoy boutique hotels, authentic Italian cuisine and beautiful views without feeling like you are breaking the budget.

Which Is Better For Family Vacations?

Beach umbrella with people swimming in the water behind it

In Tropea, all I could keep saying to my husband is “I can’t wait to bring our kids here!”  That’s because our teenagers love the beach. We could easily see them spending the day with us at the beach and in the amazing water, swimming or kayaking.

Tropea is the kind of place where they could walk around safely on their own in town.  The town is small and easy to navigate, with short distances to nearby day trips for the entire family to enjoy.

You are also likely to find accommodations for larger families just outside the town center, making trips to the beach easily within reach.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t take your kids to Taormina. It’s just a bit more of a romantic, upscale destination, where distances are slightly larger and everything is pricier.  If I were bringing my family, I would probably stay in a nearby beach town and visit Taormina during a day trip or for dinner.

Which Is Geared Towards Couples?

Taormina is one of the most romantic towns in Italy. I guess that’s why we saw a few weddings there, and it’s a favorite destination among honeymooners, as we discovered when Jeff Bezos was on his while we were in town.

Cliffside dinners and evening walks down cobblestone walkways felt straight out of a movie.

That said, we loved Tropea as a couple too and there were certainly many couples staying there but it doesn’t ooze romance the way Taormina does. Although if you time it right and catch one of Tropea’s gorgeous sunsets, you may think differently.

Can You Visit Taormina and Tropea On The Same Trip?

Yes, Taormina and Tropea are close to each other, making it easy to visit both towns on the same trip. Traveling from one town to the other requires crossing the Messina Strait from Sicily to the region of Calabria on Italy’s mainland.

You can drive or take a train but whatever mode of transportation you choose, you’ll inevitably need to take the 20-minute ferry to the other side (you can drive your car on it too), and then it’s a 45-minute drive to either town.

Where To Stay

🌋 Taormina:

For spacious and stately rooms, Hotel Villa Belvedere is a great place to stay and spend the day at the pool.

If you’re sticking to a budget but want to enjoy the benefits of having access to a pool and rooms with a view, Hotel Splendid is well-situated, right near the cable car.

🏖️ Tropea

For jaw-dropping cliffside views, Palazzo Mottola is the place to stay, and a short walk down to the beach.

Just outside the town center is Hotel Rocca Della Sena at a cheaper price point but still close to the beach.

    How To Get There

    🌋 Taormina

If you are flying, the closest airport is in Catania, about an hour from Taormina by car.

Taormina is 45 minutes south of Messina, a major port town where many cruise ships dock for the day. Express trains can get you to Taormina in just over 30 minutes or you can opt to drive. Taxis seem to be pricey on this route and an express train can get you there faster.

    🏖️ Tropea

Train rides from major tourist destinations in Italy to Tropea can take 5+ hours due to its southern location so flying may be the quicker option. The closest airport is in Lamezia, about an hour’s drive north of Tropea. You can arrange a private transfer to drive you to and from the airport.

    Savvy Summary: Taormina or Tropea?

    • Aerial photo of an island with a pathway to two beaches
    • An Italian piazza with palm trees, benches and buildings in the background

Taormina in Sicily and Tropea on Italy’s mainland are two of the most breathtaking cliffside towns you will see in Italy. Each offers something unique for travelers.

If you’re looking for some Sicilian culture and history, a high-end and lively atmosphere, and easy access to day trips to Mt. Etna, local wineries and historic towns like Siracusa, then Taormina is the place for you.

If you prefer a more laid-back vibe, with coastal white-sand beaches, dramatic sunsets, authentic Calabrian cuisine and people, you’ll love Tropea.

My recommendation? If you have the time, visit both of these fantastic Italian cliffside towns, like we did. I guarantee that you won’t regret experiencing the best of each.
