In the past, I always struggled with what to bring with on vacation. It felt like a guessing game, never quite the right items or clothes, losing every time. But after several recent trips to Europe, and a lot of trial and error, I’ve finally been able to perfect my list down to exactly what works for long-haul trips or long weekends away. These are items I’ve tried and tested and now recommend to all women I know before their next trip.

Below is a breakdown of my travel essentials list for women, covering what to take on the plane, what you’ll need at your destination and the gear and gadgets that make every trip run smoother.

Travel Essentials For Women

Here is a list of travel items that will help women enjoy every stage of their trip. Some of them I didn’t even know I needed until I tried them out and now I can’t leave home without them.

Essential Items For The Plane

1. Travel Outfit

PRETTYGARDEN Women s 2025 Fall Lounge Sets Casual Half Zip Sweatshirt and Wide Leg Pants 2 Piece Outfits Sweatsuit (Black,Medium)

I have never been someone who dresses up for a flight, but I also hate looking like a slob. Finding the right outfit was always a struggle until this two-piece leisurewear suit came along, both stylish and comfortable enough for long-haul journeys. A t-shirt underneath works perfectly in case it gets warm on the plane or for something lighter once you land.

It’s lightweight, washes well, and still looks presentable when you step off the plane. This is one of those items you’ll want to get in multiple colors.

2. Roomy Carry-On Tote Bag

Travel Duffle Bag, Waterproof Weekender Bag Carry On Tote Bags for Women, Travel Essentials Sport Gym Bag for Men, Hospital Bag for Labor and Delivery, Overnight Bag Luggage Bag with Trolley Sleeve

A carry-on tote bag can make or break an airport experience, and this one gets everything right. It’s lightweight but deceptively roomy, with multiple compartments and is also waterproof. It keeps everything from laptops to snacks organized and easy to find.

The suitcase sleeve that slides over a rolling luggage handle is a genuine game changer for navigating busy terminals without wrecking your shoulder. Best of all, it fits comfortably under the seat in front of you, so your essentials stay within reach for the entire flight without a single trip to the overhead bin.

3. Lip Balm With SPF

NIVEA Smoothness Lip Care, Sunscreen Lip Balm with SPF 15 Broad Spectrum, Shea Butter, Nourishing Oils and Vitamin C & E, 3-in-1 Moisture, Repair and Sunscreen, 0.17 Oz Stick, Pack of 4

Airplane cabins are incredibly dehydrating, especially for your lips, which are the first to feel it. I always carry multiple lip products but this Nivea lip balm consistently works the best and keeps your lips from drying out.

It also has an SPF so it protects your lip from sunburn once you are at your destination. This might seem like an unnecessary item but it’s one you’ll reach for repeatedly during travel days.

4. Under Eye Gel Mask

The under-eyes are the other area that really takes a hit on long flights. These eye gel patches reduce puffiness and hydrate the delicate skin around your eyes, so you don’t step off the plane looking completely exhausted.

Packaged in individual packs, you can bring just the right amount for both flight directions. They’re easy to apply, mess-free, and require no rinsing.  A simple way to look refreshed even when you feel jet-lagged.

5. Travel Pillow

There is nothing worse than finally drifting off on a plane only to be jolted awake by your head bobbing forward. This travel pillow provides firm support to keep your head and neck upright, and is adjustable depending on how you like to position yourself.

Half the size of a regular travel pillow, it takes up very little room in your carry-on, is machine washable, and holds up across many flights. Don’t board a long-haul flight without it.

6. Running Shoes

Hoka Women's Bondi 9 Black/White 9 Medium

If your trip involves a lot of walking, Hoka running shoes are worth every penny. They genuinely feel like walking on clouds, which matters enormously when you’re on your feet all day. After testing several running shoes in the market, these came out on top.

It’s no surprise they’re a favourite among medical professionals who are on their feet for hours at a time. Your feet will thank you at the end of a long day of sightseeing.

7. Compact Travel Purse

Mini Small Size Braided Luxury Leather Women's top Handle Handbag Fashion Travel Daily Satchel

Compact travel purses have come a long way, and this one strikes the perfect balance between function and style. It holds everything you actually need on the go including your passport, wallet, phone and lip balm, without any of the bulk.

The exterior is soft yet durable and stylish. The crossbody strap adjusts easily for a secure fit and it detaches completely when you want to carry it as an evening clutch. This bag will carry you through from a morning at the market straight through to dinner out, with no purse-switching required.

8. Tinted Sunscreen For Your Face

Colorescience Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50, 1.8 fl. oz.

I’m at the stage in life where sun exposure on your face is no longer something to be casual about and a tinted SPF becomes a travel non-negotiable. Colorscience’s Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50 is my holy grail sunscreen because it makes it easy to still get that sun-kissed glow without the consequences.

It adapts its tint to match your skin tone, works like a primer, and creates a natural, glowy finish. I never leave for a trip without it and when you put it on, I guarantee the compliments on how radiant your skin looks will follow. Colorscience also makes a brush-on tinted SPF powder for easy touch-ups throughout the day.

9. Foldable Sun Hat

FURTALK Womens Sun Straw Hat Wide Brim UPF 80 Summer Hat Foldable Packable Floppy Beach Hats for Women Khaki,Large-X-Large

After several summers traveling to Italy and testing hat after hat, finding one that actually holds its shape was a game changer. No more wearing a hat onto the plane just to keep it from getting crushed in a suitcase.

This foldable sun hat packs flat and unfolds cleanly every time. The coverage is excellent for long days by the pool or beach, and it takes up almost no space. It’s one of those items that I reach for every single day on vacation

10. Travel Dress

ANRABESS Womens Summer Casual Midi Dresses Short Sleeve Polo V Neck Loose Split Wrinkle-Free Beach Vacation Tshirt Maxi Dress Black Medium

Every vacation wardrobe needs one truly versatile dress, something that works for a day of touring and takes you straight through to dinner without needing to change. This lightweight wrinkle-free dress does exactly that.

It covers your shoulders and knees, making it suitable for visiting places of worship where more modest dress is required. One piece that does the work of several and takes up very little room in your suitcase.

11. Travel Size Hair Shampoo & Conditioner That Fight Frizz

Moroccanoil Frizz Control Shampoo & Conditioner Bundle, 2.4 Fl. Oz.

Switching to travel-sized hair products was a revelation. No more lugging oversized bottles that eat up precious suitcase space. This mini set is perfectly sized for up to two weeks of travel.

When I am away, I don’t like blow-drying my hair (it’s a vacation after all!) so I need hair products that manage frizz and keep hair looking natural yet polished. The Moroccan Oil shampoo and conditioner set does the trick, and their mini frizz spray is worth adding to your haircare lineup too.

12. Sunglasses

konqkin Retro Aviator Sunglasses for Women Men:Polarized Trendy Vintage 70s Rectangle Mens Womens Shades Sun Glasses UV Protection (Brown+Grey+Blue,54mm)

Sunglasses are non-negotiable on any trip, especially during warm-weather travel with long days outdoors. Since I have a habit of misplacing mine, I don’t like to invest in an expensive pair.

Instead, I pick up a few affordable pairs in different styles to match different outfits so if one goes missing, it’s no big deal. These retro polarized aviator sunglasses are very on-trend right now and are available in men’s styles too.

13. Toiletry bag

BAGSMART Toiletry Bag Travel Bag with Hanging Hook, Water-resistant Makeup Cosmetic Bag Travel Organizer for Accessories, Shampoo, Full-size Container, Toiletries (Baby Pink, Medium)

A good toiletry bag can be hard to find but once you do, you realize what a difference it makes. This toiletry bag has four compartments to keep cosmetics and toiletries organized. It also hangs open for easy access without cluttering the bathroom counter. And it fits neatly in your carry-on.

14. eSIM

Airalo logo

While most hotels offer Wi-Fi, there are plenty of moments on the road when you need internet access and a hotel connection simply isn’t available. An eSIM is a reliable, affordable backup that eliminates the stress of expensive roaming charges. Airalo is a great option.

It’s straightforward to set up before you leave on your trip and easy to activate so that when you land at your international destination, you’re connected from the moment you step off the plane. One less thing to worry about in an unfamiliar place.

15. USB Wall-Charger With Multiple Ports

LENCENT Multiple USB Wall Charger, [22W/4.4A] 4 Port USB Travel Power Adapter, All in One Worldwide Cell Phone Charger With UK US EU European Australia, International Block Cube Plug for iPhone & ...

Even in modern hotels with built-in USB ports, there never seem to be enough outlets to go around for all of your devices especially when traveling with phones, tablets, and earbuds that all need charging at once.

This multi-port USB wall-charger is a lifesaver. It has 4 USB ports for charging all types of devices and is also a travel adapter with attachments that work all over the world. I never leave on a trip without it.

16. Handheld Mini Travel Fan

JISULIFE 3 IN 1 Handheld Mini Fan - Portable Fan & Power Bank & Flashlight, 19H Max Cooling, USB Rechargeable, Pocket-Sized for Travel, Cruise, Concerts, Makeup, 2026 Summer Gifts for Women(Pi...

I can’t keep track of the number of times I could have used a portable fan while waiting in a hot airport or touring around all day in the heat. This 3-in-1 rechargeable travel fan is compact, sleek, and surprisingly powerful.

It also functions as a portable power bank and features a built-in flashlight, making it far more useful than it might initially seem. Portable fans have come a long way and this one stands out from the crowd.

17. Air Tags

2 Pack Tracker Tags [Apple MFi Certified] Pair with Apple Find My (iOS Only) Bluetooth Air Smart Tags Key Finder Item Locator Waterproof Finder Worldwide Tracking for Pets Wallet Backpack Dogs Luggage

After hearing one too many horror stories of friends arriving at their destination without their luggage, slipping an Air Tag into my checked bag became non-negotiable. It tracks in real time directly from your phone so you can see if your luggage was loaded on the plane or is still on the tarmac at home.

This information has proven genuinely useful, providing detailed location information that airport staff need, and don’t often have, when trying to locate a missing bag. Hard to believe it wasn’t always part of my packing routine.

18. Expandable Suitcase

SWISSGEAR Sion Softside Expandable Spinner Luggage Durable Lightweight Travel Suitcase, Dark Grey, Checked-Large

Unless the trip is a long weekend away, a medium-sized check-in suitcase tends to be the sweet spot. Hardshell suitcases have become increasingly popular, but after seeing too many cracked shells on baggage carousels, softshell is the way to go. This SwissGear line has all the right features and comes in a variety of sizes for carry on or checked luggage.

It expands when you need the extra room and the exterior pocket is perfect for storing liquid products separately from clothing. Softshell luggage simply holds up better against the rough handling of travel and the 10-year warranty means you’re covered if anything ever goes wrong.

19. Water Shoes

SEEKWAY Water Shoes for Women Adult Quick-Dry Aqua Sock Barefoot Men for Beach Swim River Pool Lake Hiking Kayaking Surfing Gradient Dark Grey

Traveling to Europe and planning any time on their typically pebbly beaches? If so, water shoes are worth packing. Skipping them on a previous trip meant paying a premium for overpriced shoes on arrival.

These water shoes work well both in and out of the water so great for activities like kayaking or simply swimming in the sea. They tend to run large so sizing down is recommended.

20. Waterproof Phone Pouch

JOTO 2 Pack Universal Waterproof Phone Case for iPhone 17 Air 16 15 14 13 12 11 Plus Pro Max, IPX8 Cellphone Dry Bag XR X SE, Galaxy S23 S22 S21 S20+ S20 S10 Plus Note, Pixel up to 7" -Black

Speaking of water, if you are going to spend any of your trip near it, you’ll want to bring with a waterproof phone pouch. I completely underestimated how much would use this pouch.

But it’s ideal for boat trips, kayaking, or any time you want to head into the water without leaving valuables unattended on the beach. Peace of mind in a simple, packable pouch.

Smart Packing Tips

Keep all of your trip details in one place

Before I leave on vacation, I like to put all of my trip details in one place so I don’t have to search through emails and texts for the information. This handy trip planner itinerary template will keep you organized and you can print a hard-copy as a back-up.

Review which apps you need before you leave

Figure out which apps you’ll need for your trip and download them before you leave. It takes the stress out of searching for restaurants, train tickets, or directions when you already have the right ones on your phone. For an example of helpful travel apps, check out my list of the best apps for Italy.

Set-up Find My Tag locater & eSIM prior to departure

Make sure once you buy the Air Tag to sync it with the app on your phone before you head to the airport. That way you can track it from the moment you drop off your bag. I find that if I set up my eSIM before I leave and activate it once the plane departs, it works as soon as I land and avoid roaming fees.

Savvy Summary

Every woman eventually develops a list of travel essentials she refuses to leave home without and these are mine. From in-flight comfort items and beauty must-haves to practical gadgets that make traveling easier, each of these products has earned a permanent spot in my suitcase through real-world use. I hope this list helps you pack smarter, feel more prepared, and allows you to enjoy your next trip.
